Common Causes of a Dripping Faucet
Most faucet leaks are caused by worn-out or damaged internal components. Over time, washers, O-rings, and seals inside the faucet can degrade due to friction, mineral buildup, or simple age. In cartridge and ceramic disc faucets, the cartridges or seals may fail and allow water to trickle out even when the handle is off. Corrosion or improper installation can also contribute to persistent dripping.
- Worn-out washers and O-rings are the most common culprits
- Corroded valve seats can cause leaks at the spout base
- Loose or damaged faucet parts lead to inconsistent water shutoff
- Mineral buildup and high water pressure accelerate wear
